#274 Seasickness..... It really messes with your head but fingers crossed we can resolve it and get back to the glory days of not feeling ill on sail. It certainly doesn't worry Lenny.
Sometimes you just gotta go for it, change it up, break some plans. Sometimes to keep it spontaneous, and sometimes just because the gods will strike us down if we leave a little later.
We're taking off for the next island in the Azores chain Sao Jorge, and we struggle in the shadow of Pico, the massive monolith in the middle of the Atlantic which is sending the winds crazy. Some experimental night sailing manoeuvres should see us through đŸ€ž
Plus we tell you why we can eat a delicious fish where we are while you probably should eat it where you are. For the right reasons. If that made sense...

You can't sail AROUND the world, it's not a ball. You can sail in a circle around the land masses. My research has lead me to believe we are on a plane or in a realm. Not a ball in space, floating and spinning and flying around in four different directions. Let us know when you're sailing upside down or side ways, ha ha ha ha!

@Canan B Flat just maybe a sci. op. But, so is the ball in space. For all the same reasons. Or maybe, a bunch of other ones, H AH AHA AHA AHA! The controllers want it to be confusing ... So it shall be, plain and simple.

Flat Earth is a disinformation campaign from the same people who coined the term “conspiracy theory “. It’s designed to confuse people into disbelief of other very real theories not supported by science. If you speak to any sailors who actually go around the world or pilots who actually fly around the world you will quickly learn the that the world is round and that fact is incorporated into every navigational line used between two spots on the globe.

Hey, You call your nausea seasickness. Perhaps it is caused by an upper cervical spinal problem. This can cause nausea, perhaps subclinical until accentuated by the motion of the boat. Try a good chiropractor for a month or so. Much easier than France. Great videos BTW.

So super interesting fact about parrot fish! Marine scientists have estimated that around 80% of beaches where parrot fish reside are created from parrot fish poop! They say that the bigger species of parrot fish can poop a crazy 900pounds of poop (sand) and there poops is responsible for sandy beaches â˜ș Another reason they should be protected đŸ„°

have you tried antacids or eating dry absorbant foods like crackers toast, rice cakes. idea is to absorb excess stomach acids which are there to digest food but some peoples stomach produce more acids making them more prone to upset stomach, heart burn etc. and drink as little as possible when you think you might get sick, less liquid sloshing around in stomach, works for me

Elayna, I just experienced seasickness at its finest during a sail from Annapolis MD to Port Canaveral FL. I thought I’d be ok without anything fir the first few hours and then it hit me. Luckily I was armed with Scolpamine patches! Within the hour I was feeling better. I can’t say I was perfectly fine after that, but in spite of the rocky seas, I did well. I replaced the patch every three days as instructed by my doctor. Side effects: dry mouth and just a tad of drowsiness!

Hi Eleyna. This seasickness advice comes to you from a retired Aussie defence scientist who has studied the subject. Firstly, being susceptible to seasickness is something to be proud of, as it means your brain is doing a good job of recognising and processing signals from your eyes and ears. If the movement you feel doesn't correspond with what your eyes see, your brain recognises that something is amiss. Anxiety doesn't help. Having a young child on board will make any mum more anxious than she might have been before. A theory is that the lizard brain's reaction to sensory inconsistency is to induce vomiting, to rid the body of the rubbish you must have eaten to make your brain hallucinate. Why else would the world be spinning? We didn't evolve on catamarans, as it turns out. Research by several navies shows that a very reliable treatment for sensitive individuals - usually young, healthy sailors - is to dose up with scopolamine, taken in the form of Hyoscine hydrobromide (Travacalm HO (Hyoscine Only, in the Red pack, not Blue!), or Quells). A proven approach is, upon departing port, to apply a Hyoscine patch and take a 300mg Hyoscine tablet, simultaneously. The tablet works quickly and fades in 5-6 hours just as the patch picks up the slack and continues to deliver a therapeutic dose for three days or so, by which time your brain has given up trying to make sense of your wobbly world and you've found your sea legs. Do a test of a tablet in harbour to check that you are not allergic. Most users find this treatment causes a dry mouth feeling, which is bit annoying, but worth it. It tends not to cause the drowsiness that Travacalm in the blue pack is famous for - dimenhydrinate is dynamite and will knock you out. The caffeine they put in with it is useless. Good luck. :-)

About seasickness: I have tried cocculin in tablets a few years back on sailing trips and they worked wonderfully but I don’t live on a boat like you. On another note, your little Lenny is the cutest thing (besides my toddler ;) and in spite of all dangers you encounter on a sailboat and challenges you are constantly facing, I truly believe you are doing an amazing job with raising your child, because yes sailing to beautiful places around the world might be a hell of a life, but I can tell from watching your videos that it’s also restless, non stop action, so thank you for allowing us to escape for a few minutes when we can or need it ! I love your videos, you're all living your best lives. For seasickness, I had to beat it while working as a kayak guide on board an "expedition" ship going across the Drake Passage to Antarctica every ten days. I did this for 14 years. So I'll share with you what worked for me. I tried SO many different things but finally got the most relief from using acupuncture needles and supplementing with ginger capsules. I started the needles 12-24 hours in advance. You can get travel needles, and instructions on exactly where to place them. They come attached to little bits of tape that hold them in place, and you wear them full time while needed. There are three pairs of places to insert them, and nope, they don't hurt. The two easiest places to reach are inner forearms and just below the knees near the outside of the leg. The third location is tops of the feet. You shouldn't have trouble getting used to having them in place. Our Drake crossings lasted 2-2.5 days. I still had slight woozy feelings but if I quickly got on my bunk for 30 minutes the feeling went away. Working as a guide on multiple trips we'd get into port, have a few hours off the ship, then straight back out into the Drake Passage again. So the time was compounded. This worked for me better than pills or ginger tea or those pressure bands. I hope this helps!!!

Scoplamine is the best. I used several times the brand Scopoderm (Novartis). ItÂŽs a patch placed behind the hear. It's very efective. No more seasickness. Sometimes half a patch is enough. Just let it be there untl the passage is over. It resists to your showers and swimings. Can't buy it in Portugal. I have friend in Holland that sends it to me but I think you need a prescription. IÂŽm not sure. Try it if you can get it. Fair winds!

Also my first off shore sailing experience down the coast of OZ from Maroochydore to Sydney 4-5 days I got really sick until someone recommended Ginger Tea after than my sailing experience in the Caribbean and the Whitsunday's I always used Ginger tea made sure I started drinking it a month or so before the trip and I never got sick again. I'm uncertain of the origins of this, I can only say it worked for my wife who was seasick in a bunk on a mooring in a 34' Ferro in Pittwater in a flat calm. She already took antihistamines for migraines, but they make her drowsy so she avoids them. We were in a ship's chandler's, (lot of used gear, can't remember the name of the place now but it's well known in the Northern Beaches area I think, all the boaties would know) run by an old bloke and his wife. She gave my wife to wrist bands with a ball at one point on the inside. You wear them on your wrist with the ball underneath, (palm side). That's it. She was highly skeptical but agreed to try it. Basically, it worked. 3 days later when we were heading down to Sydney in 2 metres swells she had no problems, even able to help relash some gear that came loose. Never had a problem for the entire month we spent on the boat. I'm lead to believe this has its origins in accupressure, I've no idea why it worked for her, but I've spoken to others that it worked for as well. It may or may not help and for all I kjnow you already tried it, but just thought I'd mention it. She swears by it and if we're on a boat she always digs out her wristbands before we go.
